Columbia, SC –
? USC freshman fullback Daccus Turman injured his shoulder during a live contact play at practice on Tuesday. Turman iced the shoulder after practice and head trainer Rod Walters called his injury “a mild shoulder stinger.” Turman may be limited in his participation on Wednesday, but should be available for this Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt in Nashville.
? Wide receiver James Adkisson, who injured his knee against Virginia on Sept. 7 and has missed the past two games as a result, did some light running on Tuesday. If all goes well, Adkisson could pick up his conditioning and could quite possibly return to practice sometime early next week.
? USC head coach Lou Holtz said that senior quarterback Corey Jenkins has made steady improvement over the first four games. “Corey had done an amazing job for as little experience he has playing in a sophisticated offense,” said Holtz. “He’s throwing the ball well and has good touch with his passes. He’s learning to trust his reads and learning to trust his receivers. He only put the ball in danger once last week (interception vs. Temple).”
? Tremaine Tyler, a true freshman from Edisto, S.C., is expected to get his first career start this Saturday at cornerback. “Tremaine has moxy about him,” said Holtz. “He plays the deep ball well and he isn’t afraid of getting beat deep.”
? Senior punter Tyeler Dean has come on to have the second best average in the SEC (46.5) and the fifth highest average in the NCAA. He trails only Auburn’s Damon Duval in the SEC. “That’s something to shoot for,” said Dean, “because Duval is a terrific punter; probably the best in the country.”
? Senior wide receiver/tailback Ryan Brewer has been nominated for the 2002 National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete award. Brewer, USC’s Mr. Versatility, sports a 3.472 grade point average while majoring in Sport Administration.
? Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt (7 p.m. eastern time) will be televised back to the state of South Carolina on a pay-per-view basis. Fans should contact their local cable companies to order the telecast.
? Senior running back Andrew Pinnock racked up 135 yards rushing the last time USC played Vanderbilt in Nashville (2000). In fact, both of Pinnock’s 100-yard rushing games have come against the Commodores, with the A-Train running for 106 yards vs. Vandy a year ago in Columbia.
