RALEIGH, N.C. — South Carolina’s women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday in Raleigh, N.C., to N.C. State by a 6-1 score. The Gamecocks are now 5-1 in 2007 and the Wolfpack improved to 7-2 with the victory.
The Gamecocks lost the doubles point, surrendering the second and third spots by scores of 8-2 and 8-3. USC’s Christyn Lucas and Natasa Vuckovic managed an 8-5 victory at the top slot against Alejandra Guerra and Daria Petrovic. Kate Green and Julia Roach were 8-2 winners over Miranda Gutierrez and Gira Schofield at two doubles, and Berkeley Brock and Catherine Grotz won 8-3 playing Laura Ganzer and Megan McGavock.
In singles, Gutierrez dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Green at six singles that gave the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead. Petrovic put State within a point of clinching the match with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Schofield at the No. 1 position. Guerra grabbed the fourth point when she downed Lucas 6-2, 6-4 on court five.
Vuckovic got South Carolina on the board when she defeated Grotz in three sets 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at two singles. McGavock was unable to win her three-set contest with Roach at the No. 4 slot, falling by scores of 6-3, 1-6, 6-0. In the day’s final match at three, Ganzer fell 14-12 in a super tiebreaker to Brock after losing the first set 6-4 and winning the second by the same score.
USC was without one of its top players Ana Marija Zubori, who sat out after suffering an ankle injury during practice Thursday.
Carolina returns to action Sunday playing at No. 12 Clemson at 2 p.m.
