COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team rolled through day one of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Friday in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks won all eight doubles matches and reached the finals of four doubles flights. Rain hampered the first day of play, as all matches were played indoors and singles matches were delayed until Saturday.
Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori defeated the tandem of Jaeger-Tazi from Charleston Southern first in A-1 doubles by an 8-0 count and then won 8-4 over Borza-Leskosky of College of Charleston. Schofield and Zubori face Nazaruk-Stupak from Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center.
Christyn Lucas and Natasa Vuckovic posted an 8-3 triumph over East Carolina’s Soler-Walter in the first round of A-2 before defeating Albertz-Evans from College of Charleston 8-2. Lucas and Vuckovic play at 9 a.m. at Maxcy Gregg on Saturday against Beckmann-Kovacs of Armstrong Atlantic.
Laura Ganzer and Megan McGavock picked up an 8-2 victory versus Ludwig-Murugaboopathy from Francis Marion in B-1. The duo next defeated De Brito-Koornhot from Tennessee-Martin by an 8-0 count. Ganzer and McGavock square off with Armstrong Atlantic’s Dahlback-Haggstrom on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Sam Daniel Tennis Center.
In B-2 doubles, Grace Blakely and Miranda Gutierrez snagged an 8-2 victory from East Carolina’s Dumitru-Thomas in the quarters and then dumped Henry-Hodges of Wofford by the same score in the semis. Blakely and Gutierrez will go for the championship against Becker-Dowse from College of Charleston at 9 a.m. at the Columbia Tennis Center.
