COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s William “Web” Brown was named to the 2006 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team announced Wednesday in Waco, Texas. The Southeastern Conference led the way with four student-athletes named to the list. Brown is a junior offensive lineman and has started two games for the Gamecocks at left guard.

The two 11-man teams, a Division I-A team and a combined team from Division I-AA, III, III and NAIA, honor players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams.

“It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities,” AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. “Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities.”

Brown’s community service efforts include: two-year volunteer for the Children’s Chance Dinner, member of Pigskin Poets at Richland County (S.C.) Public Library, participated in numerous Family Literacy Nights at Oak Grove Elementary and volunteered for the Salvation Army and Wesley Brown Day at Children’s Hospital. He has also served as a guest speaker at numerous churches, for the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistence Education) graduation program, and he greeted and visited with injured soldiers returning from Iraq at Fort Jackson.

The Booneville, N.C. native is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Campus Crusade for Christ and is on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with charitable organizations, service groups or community service activities. Candidates have to display sincere concern and reliability with which they are involved.
