COLUMBIA, SC — Cocky and 18 USC football players entertained hundreds of children at Pigskin Poets, a special Summer Reading Club Celebration now in its ninth season, at the Richland County Public Library on Thursday, July 27.

The library’s auditorium was transformed into a stadium, complete with a field and adoring fans. Cocky was on hand to dance and lead children of all ages in cheers before the players made their entrance to the traditional sounds of “2001.”

Pigskin Poets emphasizes the importance of reading by drawing on community enthusiasm and support for Gamecock athletics.

“In the heart of Gamecock Country, what better way to get kids excited about reading than to partner with USC athletes,” said Padgett Lewis, RCPL’s public relations manager. “This unique, one-on-one interaction with the players helps reiterate that reading is not only important, but cool also.”

Several players read books to the crowd during the event, which also featured songs, games and a huge autographing session.
