Columbia, SC – The University of South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both defeated North Carolina State University in a dual meet at home on Saturday. The USC men’s team pulled through by one point in the end defeating the 24th ranked Wolfpack, scoring 121 to 120. The women’s team finished with 135 points over NC State’s score of 103.

This was a big win for the teams who only have a month left before the SEC championship meet. The men and women both gave a solid performance and exemplified great teamwork.

“This was an exciting win for our men’s team today. We knew it was going to be a tough match-up coming into the meet today,” said Coach Don Gibb. “We remained strong and pulled through. This is the kind of racing we need going into the SEC championship soon and for Kentucky next week.”

South Carolina sophomore Dan White had two first place finishes today in the 1000 freestyle (9:26.89) and the 500 freestyle (4:32.59). Also taking first place for the men’s team were Colby Mack in the 200 freestyle (1:40.82), Kyle Cormier in the 200 IM (1:53.30) and Tamas Bathazi in the 200 Butterfly (1:53.79).

Christy Williams, sophomore claimed two top places for USC women’s team in the 200 backstroke (2:04.84) and the 200 IM (2:05.85). Diana Lopez placed first in the 100 freestyle (52.01) and Heather Roffey in the 200 butterfly (2:07.26). The women’s 200 medley relay won with a time of 1:45.84.

On the diving side, Allison Brennan took first place in the 1 meter and Tracey Richardson placed first in the 3 meter. David Ovelson came out strong today winning the 3 meter with 372.18 points.

The South Carolina swimming and diving teams will return to action on January 14 when they head University of Kentucky.
