Sept. 13, 2005

South Carolina Football will have a prominent role in Thursday’s edition of SEC-TV, a half-hour show that airs on Fox Sports South.

On Thursday’s show, reporter Jenn Hildreth gets the inside scoop on South Carolina’s versatile Syvelle Newton, who this past spring was moved from his post as the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback to that of first-year coach Steve Spurrier’s’ “go-to” receiver. And, after two games, Newton has not disappointed – 9 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. The 6-0, 214-pound junior has also been called upon to return kickoffs (3 for 55 yards), and if necessary, he could even fill in at his old position under center.

After some off-the-field problems, Newton has set his course on a bright future, and during the offseason, he earned USC’s offensive unit “Unselfish Award.” Also during her report, Hildreth gains insight into Syvelle’s Gamecock transformation, from his older brother, Cam – a rookie safety on the NFL Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad and a former four-year standout defensive back at I-AA national powerhouse Furman.

SEC-TV also follows reporter Dave Baker as he visits with former Alabama All-American and current Seattle Seahawks star running back Shaun Alexander. The former ‘Bama dynamo is leading the rebirth of an old YMCA complex in his hometown of Florence, Ky., with the “Alexander Community Center” slated to open 10/30, and benefit children, teens and elder citizens in this Cincinnati suburb.

Thursday’s SEC-TV features the “Quick Question,” which this week queries SEC football coaches – “What’s the coolest thing about your school?”

And, the show’s “Extra Point” segment delivers the biggest touchdowns from last weekend’s second stanza of SEC football action.

SEC-TV, hosted by Dave Neal, is a live, weekly, half-hour Southeastern Conference studio program originating from FSN South’s Atlanta headquarters. The show reaches 10.7 million homes throughout Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, on the nation’s largest regional sports television network. In the states of Arkansas and Louisiana, SEC-TV airs live on FSN Southwest, and throughout the state of Florida, SEC-TV airs live on Sun Sports.
