COLUMBIA, S.C.- University of South Carolina track and field senior Jenny Lake was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team as selected by CoSIDA and is now eligible for selection to the national team. A member of the first team in District III for the second straight year, Lake graduated with honors and a bachelors degree in mathematics.
Lake is one of 10 athletes selected to the first team from 57 nominations, representing 28 colleges and universities in District III (Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.) Lake is one of six athletes on the first team have cumulative grade point averages of 4.0.
Recently, Lake received the 2005 NCAA postgraduate scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis. She was recognized as USC’s 2005 Female Scholar Athlete and is one of two recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship, given by the SEC to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.
As a member of the South Carolina Honors College, Lake made the President’s List (4.0 GPA) every semester. In 2003 and 2004, she was named USC’s Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and has been a recipient of the McNair Scholar Award, USC’s most prestigious academic award based on scholastic achievement, leadership and character. She is a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon National Honorary Mathematics Society and the Pi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
Lake, a 2005 track and field team captain, finished every cross country meet as the top USC finishes all four years of collegiate career and holds the track and field 3,000m record.
