Gainesville, Fla. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team fell, 4-0, to the seventh-ranked Florida Gators on Sunday in Gainesville. The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 13-7 on the season and 6-5 in the SEC while the Gators improved to 15-2 overall and 9-2 in SEC play. The loss for Carolina snapped their four match winning streak.
The Gators jumped out to an early 1-0 start by claming the doubles point. Florida’s 12th-ranked duo of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes took an 8-2 victory at one over Danielle Wiggins and Miranda Gutierrez. Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak clinched the doubles point for the Gators with their 8-4 win at three over Laura Ganzer and Fallon Koon. The No. 2 doubles battle was suspended since the doubles point had already been clinched. The Gators had a 7-3 lead in that match when it was suspended.
In singles, Alex Liles gave the Gators a 2-0 advantage when she posted a 6-2,6-0 win over Megan McGavock at six. Whitney Benik defeated Miranda Gutierrez at four 6-3,6-2. 56th ranked Boglarka Berecz clinched the match with a 6-1,6-4 victory against Magda Wojdylo at five. The top three singles matches were all suspended since Florida had claimed the match at 4-0.
The Gamecocks will return to action on Thursday when they face Arkansas in the 2005 SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament. Carolina will be the sixth seed overall and will play at 2:00 p.m against the Razorbacks. The complete bracket and information will be released by the SEC.
