Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team dropped their regular season finale on Sunday 7-0 to the second ranked Florida Gators. The win improved Florida to 19-0 overall on the season and 11-0 in the SEC while the Gamecocks dropped to 13-8 and 5-6 in conference play.
In doubles, the Gamecocks came close to winning the doubles point but fell just short. 20th ranked Zerene Reyes and Jennifer Magley defeated Carolina’s Christyn Lucas and Fallon Koon 8-2 at number two doubles. Magda Wojdylo and Ayako Suzuki would take number three doubles 8-5 to even the doubles at one match a piece. The point would be decided at number one doubles where Laura Ganzer and Danielle Wiggins faced the 8th ranked pair of Alexis Gordon and Julie Rotondi. Ganzer and Wiggins tied the match at six all but the Gator duo would take the next two games to clinch the doubles point.
The Gators would take all six singles matches to win the overall match by a score of 7-0. Danielle Wiggins fell to Alexis Gordon, the top ranked player in the nation, 6-3,7-5 at number one singles. Justine Walsh took the first set 6-4 against Nina Suvak but dropped the final two sets 6-2,6-1 at number six singles. 24th ranked Jennifer Magley defeated Christyn Lucas 6-3,6-2 at position two while 45th ranked Zerene Reyes defeated Laura Ganzer 6-1,6-1.
Next week, Carolina will travel to Nashville for the 2004 SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament. The Gamecocks will face the Mississippi Rebels on Thursday. Times for all of the matches have not been set.
