Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina’s women’s tennis team defeated Arkansas, 7-0, on Friday at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. The win improved South Carolina to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in SEC play while the loss dropped the Razorbacks to 7-2, and 0-2 in the conference.
The Gamecocks started out fast at number two and three doubles on their way to sweeping the doubles matches. At number three doubles, Ayako Suzuki and Miranda Gutierrez jumped out to a 4-1 lead and went on to win the contest 8-3 versus Iliana Pacheco and Christian Kincannon. Danielle Wiggins and Magda Wojdylo clinched the doubles point for USC by winning 8-4 against Melissa Cornett and Whitney Morton. Wiggins and Wojdylo took the first five games of the match before clinching the victory for USC. At number one doubles, Megan Ferreira and Anna Dybicz of Arkansas took an early 5-0 lead but the relentless duo of Christyn Lucas and Laura Ganzer stormed back to win nine of the final 11 games to take the match 9-7.
In singles, the Gamecocks wrapped up the match early by taking the first three singles matches that finished on the court. Miranda Gutierrez (11-6) defeated Melissa Cornett 6-0,6-3 at number four singles to give Carolina a 2-0 lead. 85th ranked Danielle Wiggins (10-6) then put the Gamecocks up 3-0 after defeating Megan Ferreira 6-2,6-0 at the number one singles position. Freshman Laura Ganzer (9-7) clinched the victory for USC with a 6-3,6-3 win at number three singles against Iliana Pacheco. The Gamecocks closed out the match by winning the three remaining single matches to sweep the Arkansas Razorbacks, 7-0.
“Any SEC match is a good win,” said USC Head Coach Arlo Elkins. “We played really well and it is good to get the first win out of the way and now just take it one match at a time.”
USC returns to action on Sunday, February 29th to host the LSU Tigers at 1pm. The Gamecocks will conclude their four match home stand on Monday, March 1st when they host the University Tennessee-Chattanooga at 2:30.
