Charleston, S.C. – The University of South Carolina’s women’s tennis team defeated Winthrop on Wednesday, 6-1, at Patriots Point in Charleston, SC. The Gamecocks improved to 7-4 on the season with the win while the Eagles dropped to 5-1.
USC took the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches. Laura Ganzer and Danielle Wiggins won at number one doubles by a score of 8-3. Magda Wojdylo and Christyn Lucas won at number two doubles, 8-5, while Miranda Gutierrez and Ayako Suzuki took number three doubles, 8-5.
In singles, the Gamecocks would take five of the six matches. Danielle Wiggins, ranked 54th in the country, won her fifth straight match with a 6-2,6-0 win at number one singles over Danielle Moita. Laura Ganzer won in straight sets at flight two with a 6-2,6-2 win over Paula Takahashi. At number three singles, Christyn Lucas won 6-1,6-1 over Winthrop’s Renata Barreto. Miranda Gutierrez took number four singles 6-1,6-4 while Fallon Koon won 6-3,6-2 at number five singles. Winthrop’s only point of the match would come at six singles where Renata Caceres defeated South Carolina’s Justine Walsh in three sets, 6-3,5-7,1-0(4).
The Gamecocks return to the hard court on Thursday to face the College of Charleston Cougars at 5pm at Patriots Point. After the match with Charleston, USC will return home to face No. 15 Harvard on Saturday at 1pm.
