Carolina Track and Field Sees Plethora of Top Marks at Gamecock Invitational
The Gamecocks were back in action on their home track and saw some of the country's best performances
COLUMBIA—The South Carolina track and field teams competed at home and saw some stellar performances on Saturday at the Gamecock Invitational at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track.
“We saw some performances today that are farther along than we anticipated because we’ve missed two weeks of competition,” said head coach Curtis Frye. “We’ve been getting more nervous because we’ve missed some meets, but we got things done today.”
Dylan Targgart had a standout performance in the men’s shot put. The redshirt-freshman tossed the shot 19.02m/62-5 to earn an event victory. Targgart’s mark is good for No. 6 in Gamecock history. He is the sixth Gamecock ever to break the 19-meter barrier outdoors in the shot put. Targgart also moves into No. 16 in the country and No. 7 in the East Region, essentially locking in a Regional qualifying mark.
Doval Simmonds won the 400 meters’ invitational section with a personal-best time of 46.36. Simmonds’ time is tied for No. 44 in the NCAA this season and ranks tied for 18th in the East Region. Simmonds’ performance also marked his first career collegiate individual victory.
Jackson Marseille set a new outdoor personal best in the men’s high jump and matched his overall personal best. Marseille cleared 2.15m/7-0.50 to finish as the competition’s runner-up. Marseille moves into a tie for 17thin the NCAA and is tied for the 10th-highest clearance in the East Region. He also moves into a tie for seventh on the Gamecocks’ all-time outdoor performance list.
Filip Demsar made his outdoor debut. Demsar missed early action outdoors to represent his home country of Slovenia at the World Championships. Demsar was the fastest qualifier in prelims with a time of 13.99 and went on to win the event’s final with a time of 13.83. Demsar’s time of 13.83 is tied for 31st in the NCAA and tied for 15th in the East Region.
Anthony Greenhow, Jr. set a new personal best in the 200 meters. He ran a time of 20.78 to finish in a tie for fourth. Greenhow Jr.’s time is tied for 45th in the country and is tied for 26th in the East Region.
On the women’s side, the quarter-Mile crew stood out. Stephanie Davis won the 400 meters’ invitational section with a time of 52.11 in her return to competition. Davis qualified for the 400 meters indoors but could not compete due to injury. Makenzie Dunmore finished in second with a time of 52.20 and Alysia Johnson took third with a personal-best time of 52.41. All three athletes’ times rank in the top 15 of the NCAA and the top 10 of the East Region.
Behind them, Angel Frank ran a personal-best time of 53.14 to take sixth. Aaliyah Pyatt finished in seventh place with a time of 53.42 to round out a strong effort from the Gamecock women at 400 meters.
Rachel Glenn won her third high jump competition of the season. She cleared 1.90m/6-2.75 for the victory. It’s the second time she has cleared that height this season.
A pair of freshmen earned top-five finishes in the 200 meters for the Gamecocks. Jayla Jamison was the competition’s runner-up with a personal-best time of 23.09. Jamison’s time is the 18th-fastest in the NCAA this season and is the ninth-fastest in the East Region. Tierra Frasier finished fifth overall with a time of 23.58.
The Gamecocks return next Saturday at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track for the UofSC Open. The meet will honor Carolina track and field’s senior class. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
