Eaton joins Poppell’s staff at South Carolina
Andy Eaton named volunteer assistant coach of swimming and diving
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina swimming and diving head coach Jeff Poppell announced the addition of Andy Eaton as volunteer assistant coach on Monday afternoon.
Eaton most recently completed two years as an assistant coach at Franklin & Marshall College. During his tenure, F&M had two of its best seasons in team history, with the men winning conference for the first time in 10 years and breaking almost every team record. Eaton was the primary coach responsible for the distance freestyle and the 200 and up stroke groups. He also helped coach the sprint group, which included two 2020 Olympic Trial qualifiers.
In 2019, Eaton volunteer coached with Emory University for a semester, during which the women won DIII Nationals and the men placed second. He primarily helped with the sprint group, including swimmers with times that have qualified for DI Nationals.
Before coaching collegiately, Eaton was a club head coach for Chattahoochee Gold in Georgia, coaching many state champions and Junior National qualifiers, including swimmers that went on to compete for University of Georgia, Arizona State, Florida State, and other DI programs.
“We’re very excited to have someone with Andy’s experience and qualifications to be able to join us this year as our volunteer assistant,” said Poppell. “I have no doubt that Andy will have a positive impact on the success of our men and women.”
Eaton graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kenyon College. At Kenyon, he was team captain, 24-time DIII All-American, and four-time DIII team national champion.
