Swimming and Diving Faces First Road Challenge
Tuscaloosa, Ala. – South Carolina swimming & diving will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on the Crimson Tide for their first away meet of the season. The meet will begin at 11 a.m. ET and live results will be available by subscription on the MeetMobile app. This meet will be the Tide’s home opener.
The Gamecock women have started the season 2-0 with wins over Army and LSU while the men’s team has started 0-2 with two narrow losses that both came down to the last relay. The women’s 2-0 start is the team’s best start to a season since 2017.
Both of Alabama’s teams have started the season 1-0 with the women’s team earning a win at Arkansas and the men’s team earning theirs at Delta State.
South Carolina’s women are looking to even their all-time record against the Crimson Tide that currently sits at 11-12. The Gamecock men have a bit more catching up to do with an all-time record of 9-21 against the Tide.
Alabama and South Carolina last faced in dual action in 2016 at the Carolina Natatorium where the Tide swept the meet with their men taking the win 166-132 and their women winning 191.5-108.5. The last time the Gamecocks traveled to Tuscaloosa was in 2013 where the Gamecock women took the win 162-148 and the men narrowly fell 143-157.
Through the first three weeks of the 2022-23 competition season, the Gamecocks have the most SEC Athlete of the Week honors in the conference with six total. The next closest schools are Florida, LSU, and Tennessee who are all tied with three each.
In both Week 1 and Week 3 of the season, the Gamecocks had three SEC Athletes of the Week with the most recent accolades featuring two freshmen. Two of those honors belong to graduate diver Brooke Schultz who has swept the springboards at both competitions so far and has earned two women’s Diver of the Week honors. Senior Manny Vazquez Bas was named the men’s Co-Diver of the week during Week 1 for his sweep of the springboards.
Gamecock freshmen Jose Castro, Charley Bayer, and Amy Riordan have each earned their career first conference honors already this season with Castro and Riordan being named Freshman of the Week and Bayer receiving a Diver of the Week honor.
On a national scale, the Gamecocks have eight swimmers in the NCAA Division I top-10 so far this season (via usaswimming.org). The women hold six records in the national top-10 while the men hold two. Fifth-year senior Rafael Davila has the team’s highest placement as he’s currently the nation’s fourth fastest swimmer in the 1000 free with a time of 9:14.79.
