Riordan Earns Second Career SEC Honors

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina swimming and diving freshman Amy Riordan was named Women’s Freshman of the Week for week eight of the season, the SEC announced on Tuesday. This is the freshman’s second career honor, having previously earned the title during week three.

During the Gamecock Invitational, Riordan individually earned 64 points for the team and contributed a total of 150 points to South Carolina’s win. The Martinez, Georgia, native set new personal best times in all three individual events that she competed in and earned entries into the program record book in four of her five events.

Individually, Riordan won the 500 free with a new personal best time of 4:45.97. Her time makes her the fourth fastest all time in South Carolina’s records.

The freshman also placed second in the 200 free with a new personal best time of 1:46.86, making her the eighth fastest in South Carolina’s all-time records. Her time ranks at third fastest in the SEC this season and is the fastest in the SEC by a freshman (via USASwimming).

In the 200 back, Riordan placed fourth with a new personal best time of 1:57.52 which ranks at tenth in the program records.

In relays, Riordan contributed to a pair of top-4 finishes. In the 200 free relay, she swam the lead leg of the fourth placing team with a 50 free split time of 23.52.

She concluded the Gamecock Invitational as the third leg of the winning 400 free relay team with a 100 free split of 49.72. Together, the relay team swam a 3:16.43 making them South Carolina’s second fastest relay team of all time.

Riordan and the rest of the Gamecock swimmers will continue winter training and will be back in the competition pool in January. The Gamecocks will host UNCW at the Carolina Natatorium beginning at 10 a.m. on Jan. 7.
