Two Gamecocks Advance to Finals on First Day of Zone B Championships
Knoxville, Tenn. – Two of South Carolina’s divers advanced to the finals of the men’s 1-meter event at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sunday. Both freshman Charley Bayer and senior Manny Vazquez Bas advanced to the finals but came up just short of a NCAA qualifying spot, finishing ninth and tenth respectively.
In the preliminary round, Bayer placed ninth with a 341.20 while Vazquez Bas placed 13th with a 322.75. The two earned their placements out of a field of 37 divers.
In the finals, Bayer retained his ninth place position, posting a 12-dive score of 673.90 while Vazquez Bas jumped up to tenth place with a six-dive score of 665.55.
Both Gamecocks were just outside of the NCAA qualifying mark with the top seven finishers advancing. For advancing to the finals, they both have the opportunity to compete the event at the NCAA Championships, should they finish top eight on the 3-meter or top nine on the platform.
Events at the Zone Diving Championships will continue tomorrow with the women’s 1-meter and the men’s 3-meter events. The women’s 1-meter will begin with prelims at 11 a.m. followed by finals at 2 p.m. The men’s 3-meter will begin at 4 p.m. with finals to follow at approximately 6:15 p.m.
