Schultz, Verzyl Earn Spot at NCAAs
Knoxville, Tenn. – South Carolina’s divers completed the second day of competition at the NCAA Zone B Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., on Monday. Graduate Brooke Schultz and sophomore Sophie Verzyl both punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships with their placements on the 1-meter springboard.
In the women’s 1-meter event, Schultz and Verzyl both earned a spot in the finals after having placed second and fourth in the prelims respectively. Both Gamecocks retained their spots in the final round with Schultz finishing with a final 12-dive score of 645.85 and Verzyl a score of 608.95. Schultz was just 2.75 points behind the first place finisher.
This will be Verzyl’s first appearance at the NCAAs and Schultz’s fifth.
For the men, senior Manny Vazquez Bas advanced to the finals of the 3-meter event after placing 12th in the prelims. He retained his spot in 12th place in the finals, just missing the NCAA cut with the top eight divers advancing.
Vazquez Bas has one more opportunity at a shot in the NCAAs tomorrow where he will compete in the platform event. He earned a silver medal in the event at last months SEC Championships.
The Gamecock women will also compete again tomorrow with Schultz, Verzyl, and Blair Isenhour competing in the 3-meter event.
