Smith Concludes Trip to NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships

Sophomore swam three events, her best finish coming in the 100 free

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sophomore Janie Smith wrapped up her trip to the 2021 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at Greensboro Aquatic Center. She finished 34th in the 100 free, the lone event she qualified in, with a time of 49.04.
 
The Charlotte, N.C., native, who is made her first career NCAA Championship appearance this week, qualified in the 100 free after finishing 10th at the 2021 SEC Championship in Athens. Smith broke the school record in the prelims of the event with a career-best time of 48.69. All-American Christina Lappin held the previous record at 48.95 (2/23/19).
 
Smith also swam in the prelims of the 50 free and 100 fly with NCAA B-cut times in both events during the 2020-21 season. She finished 44th in the 100 fly with a career-best time of 53.39, the third-fastest mark in program history. Smith finished 45th in the 50 free with a time of 22.68.
 
Virginia, who led after day one, took home its first NCAA title in swimming and diving with 491 points. Alabama (fifth, 266 points), Georgia (eighth, 181 points), Tennessee (10th, 153 points), Kentucky (11th, 152 points), Texas A&M (14th, 107.5 points), Florida (17th, 84.5 points) and Missouri (18th, 79 points) all finished in the top-20 from the SEC.
