Women’s Swimming & Diving Begins Quest at NCAAs
Knoxville, Tenn. – South Carolina women’s swimming & diving will begin competition at the NCAA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., on Thursday. The Gamecocks have ten individuals competing at the event – eight swimmers and two divers.
The NCAA Championships will begin on Wednesday, March 15, and will run through Saturday, March 18 at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
South Carolina had six swimmers earn automatic qualifying times this year, highlighted by graduate Victoria Kwan who earned qualifying times in two events. Kwan qualified in both the 200 and 400 IM and will be joined in the 400 IM by junior Laura Goettler. Kwan earned South Carolina’s highest seeded time, coming in at No. 17 in the 400 IM. Goettler comes in at No. 29 in the event.
The Gamecock’s fly group also enters two representatives with junior Nicholle Toh in the 100 and sophomore Greta Pelzek in the 200. Moldovan Olympian Tatiana Salcutan will represent South Carolina in the 200 back and senior Janie Smith rounds out the group in the 100 free.
Each of South Carolina’s individual event qualifiers have also been invited to participate in other individual events. In addition to the IM events, Kwan will also compete in the 200 fly, Goettler will add the 200 IM and 200 breast, Toh will compete in the 200 fly, Pelzek in the 100 fly, Salcutan in the 100 back, and Smith in the 50 free.
Junior Aubrey Chandler and freshman Dylan Scholes will also compete in the Championships along with Smith and Toh in the 200 free relay. A psych sheet of all event entires can be found here. All full list of South Carolina’s events by day can be found below.
The dive team will be represented by sophomore Sophie Verzyl and graduate Brooke Schultz. The duo earned berths in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions.
Prelims at the Championships will begin each day at 10 a.m. with finals each day at 6 p.m. Parking is available to spectators in the G-7 garage across the street from the Allan Jones Aquatic Center for $10 each day. Doors will open one hour prior to the start of each session and ticketing information can be found here.
