Schultz Completes Career in Third Place Nationally

Knoxville, Tenn. – South Carolina graduate diver Brooke Schultz placed third in the 3-meter event at the NCAA Championships on Friday. She advanced to the finals as the top seed overall with a score of 352.50 and increased her score to 364.25 in the finals to finish third overall.

Schultz placed first in the prelims of the 3-meter out of 49 competitors, claiming the top spot with a 67.50 point dive in the sixth round after having spent most of the round in third and fourth place.

In the finals, Schultz got started with a 61.60 scoring dive to sit in third place. Her second dive gathered her 69 points and jumped her up into the first place position. Her third dive, a forward 3.5 somersault pike was her downfall, only picking up 35.65 points and dropping Schultz to eighth place.

She was able to get back on track though, scoring a 61.50, 69.00, and 67.50 in her final three dives to climb back up onto the podium and finishing in third.

Schultz ends her career as a Gamecock holding both the program records in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. During her two seasons in the Garnet & Black she became the most decorated diver in program history, earning four SEC gold medals and twice being named SEC Diver of the Meet at the conference championships.

Joining Schultz in the 3-meter prelims at the NCAA Championships was sophomore Sophie Verzyl who placed 24th with a score of 295.20.

On the swim side of things, graduate Victoria Kwan again had the highest finish of the day, placing 17th in the 400 IM prelims with a 4:10.17. Her time placed her just outside of a spot in the finals with the top-16 finishers advancing. Junior Laura Goettler also competed in the event, placing 27th with a 4:12.75

In the 100 fly prelims, junior Nicholle Toh placed 23rd and sophomore Greta Pelzek placed 44th with times of 52.03 and 53.15 respectively.

Senior Janie Smith competed in the 200 free prelims, swimming a 1:47.04 for 50th place. Junior Tatiana Salcutan also placed 50th in her event, swimming a 54.94 in the 100 back.
