Gamecocks Wrap Up Last Chance Meet
Athens, Ga.—South Carolina swimming and diving wrapped up the final day of the UGA Last Chance meet Sunday afternoon, closing out its pre-NCAA Championship schedule.
The highlight of the day came by way of two freshmen. Kate Luft and Mark Shperkin reached NCAA B-Cuts in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle respectively, for the first time in their careers.
Luft swam a 53.84 in the 100 back, a new personal best and the second-fastest time by a Gamecock this season. Shperkin powered home a 43.41 in the 100 freestyle.
Junior Rebecca Cohen also turned in a strong performance in the 1650 free, placing second with a time of 16:51.89 a personal and team-best in the event this season.
Up Next for the Gamecocks
The Gamecocks return home before gearing up for the NCAA Championships. The women will compete first Mar. 18-21 in Athens, Ga., before the men swim Mar. 25-28 in Indianapolis. The announcement of NCAA qualifiers will take place the next two Wednesdays.
