Legette and Williams Earn A.P. Second Team All-SEC Honors
Xavier Legette and Debo Williams represented South Carolina on the 2023 All-Southeastern Conference football teams as selected by the Associated Press, it was announced today. Legette earned second team honors at both wide receiver and as an all-purpose performer, while Williams was named to the second team unit as a linebacker.
Legette, a 6-3, 227-pound senior from Mullins, S.C., was one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top receiver, and was an A.P. Midseason Second-Team All-American. He led the Gamecocks with 71 receptions for 1,255 yards, and seven receiving touchdowns. His 1,255 receiving yards was the second-highest single-season mark in school history. Legette averaged 104.6 receiving yards per game (2nd in the SEC), 17.7 yards per reception (7th in the SEC) and 5.9 receptions per game (4th in the SEC) and logged six 100-yard receiving games. He also returned 10 kickoffs for a 21.3-yard average.
Williams, a 6-1, 232-pound redshirt junior from Smyrna, Del., recorded 113 tackles with 9.0 tackles for loss and one sack. His 113 tackles ranked third in the SEC and is the most recorded by a Gamecock since the 2002 season. He logged double-digits in tackles in seven of 12 games. He led the SEC and ranked 12th in the nation with 67 solo tackles. In addition, he was credited with three pass breakups, three quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery.
Legette was named the Steve Spurrier Most Valuable Offensive Player, while Williams was selected as the Joe Morrison Most Valuable Defensive Player at the team’s Senior Banquet. Legette also shared the Steve Wadiak Team MVP Award with quarterback Spencer Rattler and was named the team’s Most Outstanding Senior. Both Legette and Williams were named Rex Enright permanent team captains for the 2023 season.
