Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team continued their strong play on the second day of action at the Furman Fall Classic. Leading the charge for the Gamecocks was the doubles tandem of Fallon Koon and Grace Blakely. Koon and Blakely won the Flight Three Doubles Championship after defeating Furman’s duo of Shannon Moore and Lisa Bornt-Davis, 8-5.
In other doubles action, Christyn Lucas and Magda Wojdylo placed third in the Flight Two Doubles. Lucas and Wojdylo easily defeated Furman’s Marti Morris and Bonnie Baird, 8-0.
In singles action, Koon and Miranda Gutierrez advanced to the championships of their flights. Koon defeated Clemson’s Richele LeSaldo, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, to advance to the finals of the Flight Five Singles. Koon will battle for her second championship of the tournament when she faces Hilary Tyler of Iowa at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Gutierrez will face Vanderbilt’s Annie Menees in the Flight Three Singles finals at 9 a.m. Gutierrez was a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 winner over Karen Rombouts of Clemson.
In the Flight Six Singles, USC’s Wojdylo and Justine Walsh will face off for the championship. Wojdylo defeated Furman’s Lauren Welch, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the finals. Walsh was a decisive 6-1, 6-1 winner over Marti Morris of Furman. Walsh and Wojdylo will take to the courts at 10:30 a.m.
Ayako Suzuki and Danielle Wiggins were also victorious for the Gamecocks on Saturday. Suzuki and Wiggins will play for fifth place of their respective brackets.
The final day of the Furman Fall Classic will begin at 9 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
