Carolina Closes Regular Season at Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 25, 2024) – South Carolina Track & Field will close out the 2024 outdoor regular season this weekend by competing in the Charlotte Invitational.

Meet Information
The Charlotte Invitational is a two-day meet at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center that will start tomorrow with the first Gamecock competing at 5 p.m. as Ridge Dowe will open competition with the hammer throw. The Gamecocks will compete in three events tomorrow: men’s hammer (5 p.m.), women’s steeple (8:10 p.m.) and the women’s 5K invite at 9:10 p.m. South Carolina will close the regular season on Saturday by competing in 22 separate events, beginning at 11 a.m. with the men’s long jump and concluding with the 4x400m relays at 5 p.m. (men) and 5:10 p.m. (women). Some of the highlighting teams for this weekend joining the Gamecocks will be: Duke, Liberty, N.C. State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The Tar Heel men are ranked 12th in the USTFCCCA, while the Virginia Tech men sit eighth.

The Premier Club
The Gamecocks have been a steady Top-25 team since the indoor season began. The women enter the final regular season weekend ranked fifth in the latest USTFCCCA Top-25 rankings, while the men sit 20th overall. The women have the top 200m event squad, coming in at No. 1 for the fourth consecutive week. The 400m women’s squad finds themselves ranked second for the third consecutive week. Meanwhile on the men’s side, the 100m squad ranks sixth overall and is inside the Top-10 for the fourth consecutive week. The next best event squad for the men is the 1500m group, sitting 14th overall.

Down to the Wire
South Carolina will have two more chances to solidify spots in the NCAA East Regional on May 22-25 in Lexington, Ky. The Gamecocks will compete this weekend in Charlotte and will then take on the SEC Outdoor Championship on Thursday, May 9-11 in Gainesville, Fla. To qualify for the East Regionals, individuals must be ranked inside the Top 48, while relays need to sit Top 24.

As it stands right now, the Gamecocks have 40 East Regional qualifying marks heading into the final regular season meet. Of the 40 marks, 17 are ranked inside the Top-10 and 11 of those 17 are Top-5 rankings.
