Verzyl Named to USA Diving Tier 1 Team
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina swimming and diving junior Sophie Verzyl earned a spot on the 2024-25 USA Diving Tier 1 High Performance Squad based on her fifth-place finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The selection puts her among the top 10 female divers in the nation.
As part of her selection, Verzyl is seen by the organization as a potential Olympic-level divers who USA Diving will focus on assisting in their journey to representing the United States throughout the upcoming years’ international competitions. She will be invited to participate in national training camps and clinics as the group of 20 divers (10 male, 10 female) prepare for international level meets.
Verzyl has previously represented the United States in the 2021 Junior Pan American Championships, where she took bronze on the 1-meter board.
“There is no doubt in my mind that Sophie has earned her spot as one of the future stars in our sport,” South Carolina head diving coach Michael Wright said. “She is a humble competitor who thrives under pressure. I’m really looking forward to seeing Sophie’s hard work pay off as we go into our first dual meet next week.”
Veryzl was the 2023 SEC 3-meter silver medalist before taking an Olympic redshirt season in 2023-24. Her focus on training for the Olympics yielded a fifth-place showing on the 3-meter board at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, narrowly missing selection for the U.S. team. The junior is back with the Gamecocks this season, looking to follow up on her All-SEC Second-Team selection as a sophomore.
