Verzyl Named SEC Diver of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina junior Sophie Verzyl was named SEC Female Diver of the Week, the league office announced today. It is the fourth time she has won the award in her career and comes after her first competition of the season.

In last Friday’s season-opening tri-meet against No. 13 Georgia and Vanderbilt, Verzyl swept the diving events. It was her first college competition after taking an Olympic redshirt year last season, and the junior wasted no time hitting her marks. She opened the meet with a 369.00 on the 3-meter board, topping her nearest competitor by over 90 points. On the 1-meter she posted a score of 330.38 to win by over 50 points.

The Gamecocks are back in the pool on Fri., Oct. 25, at Duke and follow that with a trip to North Carolina on Sat., Oct. 26. On the women’s side, Duke is ranked 15th, and the Tar Heels come in at No. 18.
