Gamecock Swim & Dive Takes on the ACC This Weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina swimming and diving heads north to the heart of ACC country for a pair of dual meets this weekend, taking on Duke on Fri., Oct. 25, and North Carolina on Sat., Oct. 26. The 17th-ranked Gamecock women will face a pair of ranked opponents with the Blue Devils coming in at #16 and the Tar Heels at #21 in the latest CSCAA Rankings

South Carolina’s women made their way into the rankings behind a strong showing in the season-opening tri-meet with Vanderbilt and #13 Georgia two weeks ago. The Gamecocks cruised by Vanderbilt and kept Georgia within arm’s reach throughout thanks to six individual wins, including junior diver Sophie Verzyl who swept her events and won SEC Diver of the Week honors. The well-rounded women’s side won races in freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly. Three newcomers etched their names in the program’s all-time top-10 performers in the 1000 free to kick off their Gamecock careers.

On the men’s side, senior Linus Kahl swept the breaststroke events, and newcomer Tommy Eaton put his name in the program’s all-time top five in the 200 butterfly in his debut meet. The Gamecocks brought home five other second-place finishes at the meet, including Liam Kerns’ pair in the breaststroke events to give the Gamecocks 1-2 finishes in both.

Duke’s men are 1-1 on the season and coming off a loss to Virginia Tech in their home opener. The women are 1-0 after a win over the Hokies. Senior diver Margo O’Meara posted a pool record on the three-meter board at the meet, setting up a showdown with Gamecock star Verzyl. Action at Taishoff Aquatics Center will stream live on ACCXN with diving set to start at 4 p.m., and swimming going off the blocks at 5 p.m.

North Carolina makes its season debut this weekend, hosting Auburn on Friday ahead of the Gamecocks’ visit on Saturday. The meet at Koury Natatorium will stream live on ACCXN with diving starting at 9 a.m., and swimming beginning at 10 a.m.
