Verzyl Earns Fourth SEC Weekly Award of the Season
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Junior South Carolina diver Sophie Verzyl was named SEC Female Diver of the Week for the fourth time this season, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. This marks the second consecutive week she has received the honor. She also has garnered this award more times than any other athlete in the conference so far this season.
Verzyl was dominant at the UGA Invitational hosted in Athens, Georgia last week as the South Carolina native swept both the events that she competed in, facing divers from several SEC programs such as Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Florida and Missouri. The junior first competed in the 3-meter, placing first with a score of 374.20 in finals which was 49 points ahead of the runner up. The following day Verzyl competed in the 1-meter, putting up a score of 295.15 in the prelims which had her seeded second going into finals. She managed to bounce back with a season best score of 337.60 that night to win the event by 34.25 points. In both events, Verzyl competed at the highest degree of difficulty out of all the divers in the meet.
Additionally Sophie Verzyl has put up the highest 3-meter score and second highest 1-meter score in the conference this season.
Select divers compete at the USA Diving Winter Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana from December 7-15. Six Gamecocks then represent South Carolina at the CSCAA National Open Water Championships on the 15th in Miami, Florida. The whole team returns to action on January 4th for a dual meet with Virginia Tech at 12:00 p.m., hosted by the Hokies in Christiansburg, Virginia.
