Verzyl Tabbed SEC Diver of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina diver Sophie Verzyl was named SEC Diver of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday. This marks her third consecutive and fifth total weekly honor of 2024-25. The junior is now tied with Gamecock alum Brooke Schultz for the most SEC Diver of the Week awards collected in a season in program history.
Verzyl swept both her events by over 20 points at South Carolina’s dual meet against Virginia Tech this past Saturday to help lead the No. 22 Gamecock women to a 175-125 victory over the Hokies. In the 3-meter she put up scores of 51.75 or higher on each dive including a 67.50 on a back 2 ½ somersault pike to earn a final score of 369.53. This win marked her seventh in the event this season, making her undefeated in 2024-25 collegiate meets thus far. The Columbia native started off strong in the 1-meter, earning 58.50 points on a forward 2 ½ somersault pike to put her in first place going into the next dive. The junior struggled during dive two, falling to seventh place after earning only 36 points. She then made a massive comeback, jumping back to first place after a score of 52.56 on her final dive, a forward 1 ½ somersault 2 twist free, to win the event.
South Carolina continues the season on the road this Saturday, January 11 for a dual meet with SEC foe Auburn. The Gamecocks then host Georgia Tech on January 25 to wrap up the regular season. The SEC Championship takes place from February 17-22 at the University of Georgia.
