Riordan and Verzyl Pick Up SEC Weekly Awards

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina seniors Amy Riordan and Sophie Verzyl were named SEC Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday.

Riordan earned SEC Women’s Swimmer of the Week honors for the second time this season following a dominant performance in the Gamecocks’ dual meet victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. She captured individual wins in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.12) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.78), leading South Carolina to a commanding team win.

Her 200-yard backstroke time set a new Carolina Natatorium pool record and was the fastest time in the nation this week and the second fastest time in the SEC this season.

Riordan also played a key role in the relays, swimming the opening leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:38.26) and leading off the 400-yard freestyle relay, which finished second overall.

Verzyl claimed SEC Women’s Diver of the Week honors after sweeping both springboard events against Virginia Tech. She won the 1-meter dive with a score of 338.85 and followed it up with a victory on the 3-meter board, scoring 371.63.

The award marks Verzyl’s fourth weekly honor of the season and the 13th of her career.
