Brown and Muhammad Recognized with SEC Postseason Awards

COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 12, 2026) – South Carolina’s Alexis Brown and Jathiyah Muhammad have earned SEC Indoor Track & Field postseason honors on Thursday morning, as announced by the league office. Brown was named Women’s Co-Newcomer Runner of the Year, while Muhammad was awarded Women’s Newcomer Field Athlete of the Year.

Brown, a senior transfer from Lenoir-Rhyne, has proven to be a key pick up for the Gamecocks in the sprints group. This indoor season, the Georgia native has climbed into second all time in program history for the 60m (7.18) and seventh in school history for the indoor 200m (23.09). Brown placed sixth at the SEC Indoor Championship in the 60m, running 7.21 to become the first Gamecock since 2011 to score in that event. The senior sprinter has competed in seven meets this indoor season and has been responsible for two 60m victories and two 200m gold medals.

Muhammad is in her first season with the Gamecocks after transferring in from Arizona. The sophomore pole vaulter, competing in her first indoor collegiate season, captured the SEC title in the women’s indoor pole vault when she cleared 4.40m (14-5.25). The California product became the first Gamecock female to win the SEC Indoor Championship in the pole vault since Kylene Nixon in 1999. This indoor season, Muhammad set a new program record when she cleared 4.50m (14-9) to win the Razorback Invitational, besting Hailey Sweatman’s previous record of 4.35m (14-3.25). Muhammad has either tied or cleared 4.35m in three separate meets this indoor season. The former Wildcat turned Gamecock has competed in seven meets this indoor season with five wins, one runner-up finish and one bronze medal finish.

The pair of award winners will return to competition this weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. alongside the rest of their teammates. Competition begins on Friday afternoon and will conclude on Saturday evening. Brown will be running the 60m semifinals on Friday at 6:35 p.m. (ET), looking to qualify for finals on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (ET). Muhammad will compete in the women’s pole vault finals on Saturday at 5 p.m. (ET).
