No. 9 Women’s Golf at Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Senior Ainhoa Olarra and junior Marion Veysseyre both posted a 2-under 70 to pace No. 9 South Carolina women’s golf in the first round of the Landfall Tradition Friday afternoon. The Gamecocks sit in fourth place through 18 holes at the Country Club of Landfall after opening with a 3-under 285.

Veysseyre (T8, -2) found her stroke early and carded a handful of birdies over her opening nine holes. Her first one of the day came on the par-4 third, and she notched three-straight birdies on Nos. 7, 8 and 9 to make the turn at 4-under 32. The Lachapelle-Auzac, France, native closed her round in style with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Olarra was steady on day one, racking up 14 pars, three birdies and just one bogey. The senior standout fired a 1-under 35 on her front nine before tallying birdies on Nos. 10 and 15 to get to 3-under on her round. She recovered from a bogey on No. 16 and recorded back-to-back pars on her last two holes. Olarra (T8, -2) and Veysseyre will head into Saturday’s second round four shots off the individual lead.

Sophomore Lois Kaye Go marked the third Gamecock to boast a round of par or better Friday. She opened with an even 72 after totaling 16 pars, a bogey and a birdie on No. 4. Go sits in a tie for 20th through 18 holes of action.

Carolina’s Ana Pelaez shot an up-and-down round that was highlighted by a team-high six birdies. The Malaga, Spain, native, who sits in a tie for 27th place at 1-over 73, fired a front-nine 37 (+1) before registering pars on two of her first three holes after the turn. She recorded four birdies over her last six holes in a stretch that also included a triple-bogey on No. 15.

Gamecock sophomore Anita Uwadia posted a 4-over 76 in round one to end the day in a tie for 58th place. She collected two birdies for her round, tallying ones on the par-4 fifth and par-5 12th.

Fourth-ranked Duke holds the 18-hole lead after opening with a 277 (-11), while No. 2 Alabama (278, -1) and No. 16 Michigan State (282, -6) round out the top three. Ana Belac of the Blue Devils sits atop the individual leaderboard with a one-round total of 66 (-6).
