Eight Gamecocks Named ITA Scholar Athletes

Columbia, S.C. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the 2017 Division I All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes on Tuesday as eight Gamecocks received honors. Hadley Berg, Silvia Chinellato, Brigit Folland, Caroline Dailey, Ingrid Gamarra Martins, Alison Mills, Rachel Rohrabacher and Hannah Templeton were all named scholar athletes for their efforts in the classroom.

The eight honorees mark the most in a single year in program history. This is the fourth-consecutive season the Gamecocks have been named an ITA All-Academic Team.

“Having a high GPA has always been one of our goals,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “We’ve always preached that tennis and academics go together. It seems that just about every semester that trajectory is moving upward. We keep getting higher and higher with our overall GPAs so that’s just a testament to our team and that collective culture that we have in terms of academic excellence. I’m proud of them.”

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: They must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and must have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

Academic success is nothing new to the Gamecocks, as Carolina had eight athletes (Berg, Paige Cline, Folland, Dailey, Martins, Mills, Rohrabacher and Templeton) named to the SEC 2017 Spring Academic Honor Roll. South Carolina also had two members of the squad (Chinellato and Mia Horvit) named to the 2016-17 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll, as well.
