ATHENS, Ga. – University of South Carolina long jumper Rougui Sow made history on Friday afternoon, as she won her featured event at the Spec Towns Invitational. Sow recorded a mark of 22-0 ¾ (6.72m) with her sixth and final attempt at Spec Towns Track, the best long jump effort in Gamecock history and the top mark in the world so far this season.
Sow had already set a new collegiate PR of 21-4 when she stepped in for her sixth and final attempt. The Le Havre, France, native made history with her last effort, a mark of 22-0 ¾ (6.72m) that broke Chelsea Hammond’s previous school record of 21-6 ¾ set in 2004. It also surpassed Australian athlete Naa Anang’s mark of 6.65m, set in Canberra on March 12, as the world’s top mark so far this outdoor season.
“I feel really happy, because I felt good the jump before, so (associate head coach Delethea Quarles) and I were just like, ‘let’s go get it,’ and we did!” Sow said.
Through one day of competition, the Gamecocks lead the women’s standings with 31.5 points and stand second in the men’s standings, also with 31.5. Akron’s 50.5 points lead the way after one day for the men.
The Gamecocks got a second victory on Friday from Isaiah Moore. The junior laid down a time of 13.89 in the 110mH for his second win of the outdoor season.
Yann Randrianasolo was the first of the Gamecocks to finish, as he placed second in the Lewis Gainey Long Jump. Randrianasolo’s mark of 24-10 ½ is his best as a Gamecock, the eighth-best mark in Gamecock history and the ninth-best effort in the NCAA East Region this season.
Clarence Gallop also finished runner-up on Friday, coming in second in the hammer throw. His best effort in Athens was 214-10.
Armand Woodley set a PR on Friday and finished third in the pole vault. The sophomore cleared 15-7 on his first attempt.
In the women’s 100mH, the Gamecocks saw Taranisha Taylor collect a third-place result. The senior clocked in at 13.85, just.01 off a PR.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Curtis Frye
“Rougui is doing the things it takes to be the best in the world. She’s already an All-American, and now she’s the school record-holder. We couldn’t be more pleased, and this is setting us up for big SEC and NCAA Championships for her. Having the best mark in the world should give her lots of confidence going forward. She and Coach D are really clicking, and she’s handling her adjustment to the U.S. and her university experience really well. Hopefully the momentum from her victory and Isaiah’s win sets us up for more big things tomorrow.”
UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
