COLUMBIA, S.C. — No. 21 South Carolina women’s tennis put together a total team effort Saturday en route to a 7-0 win over Clemson. The Gamecocks ran through the doubles point then battled it out in singles play, capturing the first three singles points and clinching the match.

Mia Horvit and Caroline Dailey gave the Gamecocks their first doubles win, after taking a 4-0 lead over Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and Sydney Riley for a 6-1 victory. South Carolina captured the doubles point when the Gamecocks’ lead pairing of Paige Cline and Hadley Berg (35) defeated Marie Leduc and Fernanda Navarro in the No. 1 spot 6-2.

Berg dominated her opponent as the only Gamecocks to win in straight sets, with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph on court six to double the lead. Senior Brigit Folland contributed a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win, her fifth singles win of the season, that gave the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead.

Cline clinched the match for the Gamecocks when she rallied from a 4-6 loss in the second set to take a 6-2 win in the third set. The win gave South Carolina a point in the Palmetto Series, making the current score 6-6.

The Gamecocks played out the rest of the singles, taking wins in three sets on courts one, two and four to make a 7-0 final score over Clemson.

“It’s big for us to get a 7-0 win over our always competitive instate rival. Clemson put up a great battle, pushing five matches to three sets. I’m proud of our team for responding by stepping up and taking care of business. Our goal after the doubles point was to win on every court and we didn’t let our foot off the gas at 4-0. All and all it was a great team effort”

The Gamecocks host No. 2 North Carolina, their first ranked opponent, Saturday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. The match will be the first home competition of the season for the women’s tennis team at the Carolina Tennis Center. Admission and parking for all home tennis matches are free of charge.
