COLUMBIA, S.C. — No. 21 South Carolina women’s tennis scored a 4-1 victory over Virginia on Sunday in Charlottesville, Va., to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Cavaliers dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

The Gamecocks swept the doubles point for a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Silvia Chinellato and Brigit Folland defeated Hunter Bleser and Camille Favero on court three 6-1 for the Gamecocks’ first win. On court number two, Caroline Dailey and Mia Horvit took a 6-4 victory over Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley to clinch the doubles point.

South Carolina got off to a strong start in singles play, winning the first set on courts two, four, five and six. On court one freshman Ingrid Gamarra Martins retired due to injury tying the match at 1-1. Folland made short work of Favero on court six winning 6-2, 6-1 putting the Gamecocks ahead 2-1.

Hadley Berg shut down her opponent in the second set with a 6-1 score, after battling in the first set for a 8-6 tiebreak win on court five to give the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Mia Horvit provided the winning point for the Gamecocks. Trailing 3-5 in the first set, Horvit won three straight to force a tiebreak win at 6-4, making for a final score of 4-1.

“Overall, we are happy with the outcome. UVA is always tough at home and we competed hard, especially as they tried to turn the match midway through singles. We have been struggling a bit at two and three doubles, so it was good to see us making some strides at those spots. Ingrid Gamarra Martins went down with an injury in the No. 1 spot and perhaps we could have played better in some other spots but we leave Charlottesville aware of what we have to work on in the coming week to get ready for Clemson.”
