TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Three South Carolina women’s golfers sit in the top 15 individually following day one of the Florida State Match-Up at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course and Club. The Gamecocks fired a 9-over 297 on Friday to finish the first round in a tie for second behind host Florida State, which opened with a 5-over 293.

Senior Sarah Schmelzel, junior Katelyn Dambaugh and sophomore Ainhoa Olarra all turned in 2-over 74 performances on the first day of the 54-hole event. The trio will head to Saturday’s second round in a tie for 15th place on the individual leaderboard.

Schmelzel, who began the day on hole No. 10, recovered from a pair of early bogeys, and made the turn at even 36 after registering birdies on No. 15 and 17. A birdie on the par-5 fourth dropped the Phoenix, Ariz., native to 1-under on the day before she recorded three bogeys over her final five holes to finish at 2-over.

Dambaugh produced an up-and-down round on Friday, as she tallied four birdies and four bogeys. After making the turn at 2-over 38, the junior played her final nine holes at even par following birdies on No. 2 and 6. Olarra also notched a team-high four birdies in the opening round and shot par-or-better on nine of her 10 final holes. Her final birdie of the day came on the par-4 seventh.

Freshman Marion Veysseyre, who made her debut for the Gamecocks on Friday, carded a steady round that included pars on 13 of 18 holes. She notched a birdie on the par-4 first and ended day one in a tie for 22nd place after recording a 3-over 75. Junior Jia Xin Yang, the fifth Gamecock in action, stands in a tie for 57th after opening with an 8-over 80.

SMU and Coastal Carolina matched South Carolina’s 9-over performance on Friday, while Furman (+10, 298) and Texas A&M (+10, 298) round out the top five. The Aggies’ Maddie Szeryk sits atop the individual leaderboard after totaling a 3-under 69 in the first round.
