Kenny McKinley was on the fence about which college to attend during his senior year in high school. A lot of different schools wanted the highly-touted recruit from Mableton, Georgia.
However, one day the athlete and high school quarterback got a call from someone who told him that South Carolina was about to hire Steve Spurrier as head coach. That proved to be the tipping point for McKinley.
“Kenny got off the call and called me and said ‘Dad, I made my mind up. Coach Spurrier is coming to South Carolina and that’s where I want to go,'” Kenny’s dad, Ken McKinley, recalled. “I could just hear the excitement in his voice.”
McKinley went on to a record breaking career and is one of eight members of the USC Association of Lettermen Athletics Hall of Fame class for 2015.
