The South Carolina Gamecocks worked out at the Bluff Road practice fields on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 13/15 Gamecocks (3-1, 2-1 SEC) will host the Missouri Tigers (3-1, 0-0 SEC) in an SEC Eastern Division battle for the Mayor’s Cup on Saturday, September 27. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at a sold out Williams-Brice Stadium. ESPN will broadcast the game nationally with Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge in the booth and Holly Rowe on the sidelines. ESPN’s GameDay show will be in Columbia as well, televising from 9-noon from the famous Horseshoe in the middle of campus.
Offensive guard Cody Waldrop (knee) did not practice on Tuesday, but running back Brandon Wilds (shoulder) did practice in a yellow “no contact” jersey.
“We’re just working on the little things,” said senior defensive tackle J.T. Surratt following the workout. “The little things is what’s going to make us better. We’re focused on our fundamentals, doing things the right way, running the plays right, doing what we’re supposed to do when we’re supposed to do it.”
Surratt knows that Mizzou quarterback Maty Mauk will present some problems. “He’s a real good quarterback. He’s real good on his feet. We’ve got to be better at our assignment, better at containing the quarterback this week to keep him in the pocket.”
Defensive back Brison Williams played safety for the first time this year at Vanderbilt after playing solely at cornerback during the first three games. The senior from Warner Robins, Ga. feels comfortable playing either spot. “It’s going good. I know safety. It really doesn’t matter. It’s the same to me (playing corner or safety).” Williams said he was playing nickel back when he had the pick-six against Vanderbilt.
Williams confirmed that he is the one making the calls in the secondary and getting the players lined up correctly when he’s playing safety. “I try to do it when I’m at corner too,” noted Williams, “but it’s hard to communicate to everybody.”
The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Wednesday afternoon.
