Gotro Named SEC Freshman Diver of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – South Carolina diver Jordan Gotro was named Southeastern Conference Men’s Freshman Diver of the Year on Thursday. The conference announced its annual Swimming and Diving Awards, as voted on by the league’s head coaches, and recognizing the conference’s top performers and coaches of the 2013-14 season.
Gotro had an impressive showing at the SEC Championships, placing in the top 15 of all three diving events. His highest finish came in the one-meter as he placed 10th. He finished one spot back of that result on the platform. In each of the two events, the Sacramento, Calif., native scored season-high point totals en route to being the top finishing freshman in the events. He was the second-highest finishing freshman in the three-meter as he placed 15th.
At the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, Gotro continued his progression as he came away with a 12th-palce finish on the one-meter, a day after taking 15th on the three-meter board.
“Jordan has been such a diligent worker all year long,” South Carolina head diving coach Todd Sherritt said. “He had so much ground to catch up on the rest of the country, and it was truly remarkable on how fast he improved. By putting together a month-to-month climb in his daily training, it resulted in high finishes at conference and NCAA Zone Championships. This is a great start for Jordan. He has a great future ahead of him at South Carolina.”
Additionally, the SEC released its 2014 All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman Teams. First-team All-SEC honors went to those student-athletes who finished first in each event at the SEC Championships in February, including relays. Second-team All-SEC honors went to the second and third-place finishers in each event at the SEC Championships, including relays. The top freshman finisher in each event was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
