The University of South Carolina football squad worked out Wednesday afternoon at the Bluff Road practice fields. The No. 12/13 Gamecocks (2-1, 1-1 SEC) are enjoying the first of two bye weeks during the season. They will return to action on Saturday, September 28 when they travel to Orlando to face the UCF Knights (3-0) in a non-conference matchup. Kick time is set for noon from Bright House Networks Stadium (45,323).
“We had a decent practice today,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “I thought our defensive backs, linebackers, all the secondary players looked good during our pass perimeter drills today. They got several interceptions and were really breaking on the ball. The best looking quarterback today was Brendan Nosovitch. He threw some good ones in there. Our other two guys were pretty average today. It was a pretty good practice.
“One guy who busted his tail and ran full speed all day in practice today was Bruce Ellington,” continued Coach Spurrier. “Bruce had statistically his best game ever here last week. He’s out here trying to get better every day. I wish we had 100 percent trying to get better every day but those that are, we’ll recognize them and hope we can make it contagious to the rest of the guys to bust their tail and try to get better out here every day.”
Coach Spurrier recognizes that the offense has been clicking this season. “We’ve got some potential because we do have a big, strong offensive line. Young (Clayton) Stadnik came in there and held his own. He’s played well. All the other guys have played a bunch. Our offensive line we’ve got probably as experienced as anybody in the conference. So we should sort of dominate the line of scrimmage at times.” Coach Spurrier noted they would not need to make a decision on the starting center until Cody Waldrop is healthy.
The Gamecocks will practice again on Thursday before taking the weekend off.
