Three members of the South Carolina Gamecock football team have been named to a pair of preseason watch lists, it was announced today.
Senior center T.J. Johnson has been named to the Outland Trophy Watch List, while a pair of defensive ends, senior Devin Taylor and sophomore Jadeveon Clowney, were named to the Bronko Nagurski Watch List.
Johnson was named to the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which goes to the best interior lineman in college football, according to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the three Outland finalists to be named on Nov. 19. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. The Outland Trophy, presented annually since 1946, is the third oldest award in major college football. The winner of the 67th Outland Trophy, named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn and Kansas at the turn of the century, will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 6 on ESPN. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be held on Jan. 10, 2013, in Omaha, Neb.
Taylor and Clowney are two of 84 players in line for the Nagurski Award, that is awarded annually to the nation’s best defensive player by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner is chosen from five finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner, the best defensive player in America. The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet will be Dec. 3 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
Earlier this week, junior running back Marcus Lattimore was named to the Maxwell Watch List, Taylor and Clowney were named to the Bednarik Watch List and Johnson was named to the Rimington Watch List.
