COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina senior Whitney Avers and junior Jay Warner have been named to the 2013 SEC Swimming and Diving Community Service Team, the league announced Thursday.

A native of Arnold, Md., Avers earned her spot on the women’s community service team after participating in several community service projects. She walked in the Light the Night Walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She worked in the nursery at First Presbyterian Church and served dinners at the Transitions Homeless Shelter. Avers, who is a team captain, is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a School of Public Health Dean’s Student Advisory Council Representative and an Exercise Science Club Health Fitness Track Student Representative.

Warner, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., joined Avers in participating in the Light the Night Walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He helped package food products at Harvest Hope Food Bank and served dinners at Transitions Homeless Shelter. A fall honor roll student, Warner also helped with the setup for the Diabetes Walk in Columbia and made visits to local schools.

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all league-sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community in superior service efforts.
