COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior Marvin Reitze was named a Capital One Academic All-American for the second consecutive season, the college Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday, with Reitze picking up first team honors. He was a third team selection in 2011.
South Carolina has had at least one Academic All-America selection in six of the past eight years, including its current stretch of four consecutive seasons. The Gamecock track program has had six total Academic All-Americans since the 2009 season. Reitze is the second member of the men’s team to earn first team honors, following the footsteps of Mattias Ohlsson who was a first team selection in 1998. He is the first Gamecock – man or woman – to earn first team honors since Jenny Lake did so in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
Reitze, who last month was named the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year after an outstanding athletic and academic career for the Gamecocks, posted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.912 in management and international business for the nation’s top-ranked international business program. A 2011 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American, Reitze was also named the University of South Carolina Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year last month for his academic exploits.
On the track, the Germany native is a four-time USTFCCCA All-American in the pole vault and four-time SEC medalist. During the 2012 indoor season, Reitze was the SEC Championship and NCAA Championship silver medalist, taking silver at nationals at a school-record jump of 18’0 ½ (5.50m). Reitze countered in his outdoor season by also setting the outdoor school record of 18’1 (5.51m) in his victory at the Penn Relays en route to being named the Outstanding Men’s Athlete of the Meet. He placed bronze at the SEC Outdoor Championships and took 14th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
