COLUMBIA, S.C. – Second ranked South Carolina raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and behind 5.2 scoreless innings from junior right-hander Colby Holmes, the Gamecocks defeated Elon 6-0 on Sunday afternoon to sweep a three-game baseball series. South Carolina improves to 6-0 on the year while Elon drops to 4-3 for the season. The Gamecock pitching staff was impressive the entire weekend allowing just three runs, one earned, on seven hits in 27 innings of work with 32 strikeouts vs. the Phoenix.
Holmes is now 2-0 on the year after his successful start on Sunday. He allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out six batters. Freshman left-hander Vince Fiori retired a batter and right-handers Ethan Carter and Evan Beal combined for three perfect innings to close out the victory for Carolina. Elon starter David Whitehead suffered the loss and is now 0-1 for the season. He allowed five runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in two innings of work.
LB Dantzler put Carolina ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run homer, his second home run of the season. Tanner English drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Christian Walker’s base hit into right field setting the stage for Dantzler. On Whitehead’s 2-1 offering, Dantzler drove a deep fly into left-center that cleared the fences giving South Carolina a three-run lead.
That lead increased to 5-0 in the second inning as English delivered with a two-out two-run triple. A single by Joey Pankake and a walk to Connor Bright gave the Gamecocks runners on first and second base. After a meeting on the mound from Elon with Whitehead, English drove the first pitch he saw into the gap in left-center scoring both runners.
After a scoreless third inning, South Carolina increased the lead to 6-0. TJ Costen reached base with a one-out infield single and Bright reached base on Elon third baseman Joey Tomko’s fielding error. Costen would then score on Evan Marzilli’s RBI base hit to right field.
Six different Gamecocks had hits in Sunday’s game. Ryan Kinsella went 2-for-3 to lead Elon.
South Carolina returns to action on Tuesday afternoon hosting Presbyterian at Carolina Stadium. First pitch is 4 p.m. with live video broadcast available at GamecocksOnline.com and also on the Gamecock Radio Network from IMG College.
