Columbia, SC –
Two University of South Carolina football standouts — nose guard Langston Moore and offensive tackle Travelle Wharton — have been named to the 2002 Sporting News All-Southeastern Conference first team. The national publication announced its league all-star teams on Thursday.
Moore, a senior from Charleston, S.C., started all 12 games for Carolina and led the team with 9.5 tackles for loss. He accumulated 60 total tackles, had three quarterback sacks, one interceptions and recovered two fumbles. Moore was also named a third-team All-America by The Sporting News.
Wharton, a junior from Fountain Inn, S.C., started all 12 games at left offensive tackle for the Gamecocks. He should rank among the top offensive linemen in the nation for 2003.
The University of Georgia dominated the individual awards handed out by The Sporting News. Bulldog quarterback David Greene was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, while defensive end David Pollack was selected as the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Mark Richt, who led UGA to the SEC title, was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
