Head Coach Ray Tanner
Opening Statement
We’re very happy to be able to win today. I knew it would be very difficult like it was Friday night. We found a way to score runs yesterday. Coming in, Auburn was hitting over .300 as a team. Very few teams in the country are hitting over .300. A few hits here and there and it could have been different game today. Today we got some timely hits and good pitching we’ve kept battling despite the injuries.
On the team’s injuries
I think we’re going to have to hire a couple new trainers, I don’t think we have enough. Brainard Cooper is over-worked right now to say the least. He’s trying hard to get them back as quick as he can. It’s been a little bit unusual.
On his team’s approach
Well the only thing you can ask as a coach is to go out and approach the game the right way and play hard. Sometimes you don’t play as well as you want to and sometimes it doesn’t go your way but if your approach is good from a coaching standpoint that’s all you can ask, and our guys have done that. This game we certainly could have lost, they get the leadoff guy on at the beginning of the game and we turn a double play right after that. These guys just play hard and try to find a way to win.
On his team’s effort this season
I couldn’t ask more from this team at this point. I know there’s a ways to go and we have three SEC series left and a few non-conference games. But as I sit here today, this team has given me everything I could ask for. They play hard they battle and they try to stay in position to win.
Pitcher, Matt Price
On his performance today
It kind of felt like my timing was off a bit. I just tried to get it over the plate at first but the first couple didn’t. Once I did get it dialed in the defense made plays behind me.
On having Wingo and Mooney behind him
Both of those guys are tremendous infielders, and I knew that ball up the middle would get caught or Wingo would take a stab at it. He made a good play and that’s what you expect from him.
On the injury bug
Seeing DeSean go down is tough to see, but we just keep battling and new players keep stepping up to fill spot and keep doing the job.
Shortstop, Peter Mooney
On his approach as a leadoff hitter
I just get up there and try to get on base. That’s the job of the leadoff guy is to get on base and let the other guys move you around.
On the injury bug
Now, everybody’s going down. I don’t know what’s going on; maybe it’s the Gatorade we’re drinking. We’ve just got to try and keep everybody healthy, because right now we’re dropping like flies.
On his chemistry with Scott Wingo
Not many teams like getting leadoff guys on but we love it; we know that’s our time because we can turn two. Me and him have become good friends over the past year. I really didn’t know him, but I knew we would play up the middle together and it’s been fun. We’ve developed good chemistry together.
First Baseman, Christian Walker
On the SEC standings
We don’t look at it or talk about it. We’re playing good baseball and we’re winning games and that’s all that’s important.
On the team’s injuries
Its unfortunate, but we can’t think or talk about it. It’s unfortunate but we got to move on.
On the team’s mindset
That’s one thing that I appreciate about our team is that we don’t dwell on stats. It doesn’t matter if you’re hitting .600 or .100, its not important as long as we win. Everybody has a job to do on this team and that’s what we’re doing right now.
Third Baseman, Adrian Morales
On the injury bug
The initial reaction is “are you serious? another guy goes down. It’s been tough, but somebody has got to step in. Today Neff came in and got a base hit in his first at-bat. We’ve got guys but we got to keep guys healthy because we’re starting to run out.
On the SEC standings
We control our destiny, we’ve got to continue to play well and not look at the standings. At the end it works itself out, we just need to play hard get every win we can in the SEC.
On winning on Sundays
I think we’re just trying to compete. It’s hard to compete and win on Sundays and it’s always tough in the SEC. But we’ve had good hitting and pitching here lately and we’re getting the job done.
On breaking out of a recent slump
I just try to keep swinging and help the team win; because all that matters is that we win. Keep swinging is my mentality and just try to help the team out however I can.
