COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tyler Webb hurled a career-high 7.1 innings and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts and teamed with relievers Bryan Harper and John Taylor to hurl a five-hit shutout as South Carolina defeated Southern Illinois 4-0 in game two of a weekend series. The Gamecocks are now 5-0 on the year while the loss drops Southern Illinois to 2-4 for the season. Sunday’s series finale is set for 1:15 p.m. and can be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network. Saturday’s game was played in one hour 49 minutes, the fastest game for Carolina since Feb. 19, 2006 when Carolina defeated Radford 2-0 at Sarge Frye Field in one hour 44 minutes.
Webb was effective throughout the game allowing just four hits in his longest start of his career. His seven strikeouts tie the career-high he set March 14, 2010 vs. Brown. He is now 2-0 on the year. Harper came on in the eighth inning with one out and runners on first and second and got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out. After a leadoff hit by SIU’s Donny Duschinsky in the ninth inning, the Gamecocks brought in John Taylor, who struck out the side to preserve the Gamecock victory. Southern Illinois starter Cody Forsythe went the distance but suffered the loss. He is 1-1 on the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
South Carolina opened up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Adam Mathews led off with a base hit and after stealing second base scored on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s RBI single up the middle. That lead would be extended to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning as Carolina loaded the bases on Matthews’ second hit of the game, a walk to Bradley and a hit by pitch to Christian Walker. With two outs and the bags full, Jake Williams ripped a RBI single to right field scoring both Matthews and Bradley. Carolina increased the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning with Matthews scoring on a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Adrian Morales.
South Carolina finished the afternoon with seven hits to just five for Southern Illinois. Matthews was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Duschinsky and Jordan Sivertsen each had two hits apiece to lead the Salukis.
Saturday’s shutout victory was the second of the season for Carolina.
Sunday’s series finale is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. The game was moved 15 minutes earlier than the previous time announced to accommodate Southern Illinois’ travel plans.
