COLUMBIA, S.C. – A brilliant performance by Gamecock redshirt sophomore Audrey Broyles stifled Elon (7-2), limiting the Phoenix to just two hits while handing South Carolina (9-3) its sixth straight win with a 2-0 victory in game one on Saturday afternoon at Beckham Field.
Broyles (2-1) threw just 74 pitches in the complete-game shutout, fanning six without issuing a walk. She also helped her cause with four defensive assists, tops on the team.
The Gamecocks got all of Broyles’ backing in the fifth. Junior Jackie Slawson pinch-ran for Kelley Dillon, who laced a one-out double down the left field line. On the 1-1 pitch to freshman pinch hitter Julie Sarratt, Slawson broke to third when the ball bounced away from the Phoenix catcher. As Slawson slid into the bag, the catcher’s fake throw slipped out of hand and bounced around in foul territory, allowing Slawson to score. Sarratt singled, and junior centerfielder Lauren Lackey promptly stole second on her reentry to the game. That set up the RBI single by sophomore shortstop Samie Garcia that made it 2-0.
Elon starter Lauren Taylor (4-1) took the loss, giving up two earned runs on four hits and two walks. She struck out two.
